I have been dabbling with programming in some capacity for about 13 years now, first using BASIC on an IBM PS/2 computer. (Remember that glorified paperweight?) This led to programming in QuickBasic, Pascal, Visual Basic, and C++ before stepping over into web design. While this transition into HTML started as a hobby, I saw the potential and influence web design had on the future. “Dot-coms” began to crop up on television commercials and even labels of products purchased at the store; thus, the Internet was ever more becoming a household word. The transformation of having to rely on the Internet, email, and search engines for everyday tasks amazingly did not occur until relatively a short time ago.
Today, I continue to design websites using a combination of HTML and PHP. Keeping the tradition of my programming roots, I craft each web site by hand using code instead of software programs like FrontPage or Dreamweaver. While programs like these make available a number of tools and functions to design web pages, in my personal opinion, they do not offer the flexibility required when designing a website by hand. From the ground up, I build websites with their specific purpose and audience in mind -- starting completely from scratch, facing a single pulsing cursor on a blank page.
